Stel x² + 6x + y² + 2y = 10 + a, de waarde van a uit {1,2,3,4,5} zal dan het antwoord bepalen.
x² + 6x + 9 + y² + 2y + 1 = 10 + a + 9 + 1
(x + 3)² + (y + 1)² = 20 + a
Dit is de vergelijking van een cirkel met middelpunt (-3,-1) en straal de vierkantswortel uit 20+a.
Deze zal geheel zijn voor (o.a.) a = 5, m.a.w. als het rechterlid 15 is.
De straal van de cirkel is dan 5.
