Uit bv.   |x| = 5   volgt dat   x = 5  of  x = − 5
(de absolute waarde van zowel − 5 als +5  is 5)
Dus : uit   |x − 8| = 6  volgt dat  x − 8 = 6  of  x − 8 = − 6
Uit de eerste volgt   x = 6 + 8 = 14
